San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012: Lower Dens

Supongo que si ahora mismo os digo, luego de un par de días en el San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012, que Jana Hunter es con su banda Lower Dens uno de los proyectos más interesantes este año, seguro que pensaríais que estoy exagerando o que me he vuelto loco, pero creo que El Shoegaze que tanto predico se refleja en su estilo freak-folk que no deja indiferente.

Solo como dato curioso, son producidos por el sello de nuestro Devendra Banhart, uno de esos pequeños mecenas de proyectos que van enmarcados para el éxito, no os los podéis perder, un excelente show está asegurado. -Andrés Aguilar Caro (Barcelona)

I guess if I say now, after just a couple of days at the San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012, that Jana Hunter, with her band Lower Dens, are one of the most interesting projects of this year, you would surely think that I am exaggerating or that I am going crazy, however I think that The Shoegaze that I am always preaching about is reflected in their certainly unforgettabe style of freak-folk.

Just as a curiosity, their production is hallmarked by the one and only Devendra Banhart, one of those small projects that she patronises that are then marked for success, You cannot miss them, it’s sure to be an amazing show.

San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012: Bleached

¿Quién dice que no puedes hacer con tu hermano una banda de punk y que suene bien? Durante años ser un cantante de punk ha sido uno de mis sueños, cada mañana me levanto, afino y practico, pero creo que mis vecinos están un poco hartos de eso, y tampoco veo a mi hermano saltando sobre las guitarras a punto de arder junto a una batería melódica que pueda hacer enloquecer a un escenario. 

Para eso, ya me he buscado bandas, donde la lista crece cada vez mas con propuestas dulces como Bleached, en el que las hermanas Clavin se ponen en la lista de grupos de chicas que renuevan cada vez el estilo californiano del pop de garaje. Este año las veremos tocar en tres escenarios diferentes en el San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012, intentaremos no perdernos ninguno de los tres, ¿por qué? Who says that you can’t form a punk band with your brother, and be successful? For years one of my greatest dreams was to become a punk singer, every morning I would wake up refining and practicing, but I think my neighbours got a bit tired of it, equally I didn’t see my brother jumping up on the guitars at the point of ignition to join me in a battery of melodies to drive people wild at gigs. 

For that reason, I now search for new bands, where the ever increasing list improves with sweet propositions such as Bleached, in this way the sisters’ Clavin have been put on the list of girl groups that are rejuvenating, each time, the genre of Californian garage pop. 

This year we will see them play on three different stages at the San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012, we’re going to try not to miss any of the three…why? You only need to see their videos to understand why.

San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012: Father John Misty

El otro día tuve que contestar una serie de preguntas inquisidoras sobre mi gusto musical, en la cuál tuve que confesar que el country ha inspirado mis influencias, y que el Folk ha siempre ladeado la balanza de los conciertos en vivo que prefiero ir a ver. Hay algo de ese sonido que me envuelve y reconforta, pero es algo tan personal que su descripción precisaría de una gran crónica (que prometo para el futuro). 

Para ladear la balanza siempre necesité una mezcla como la que promete Father John Misty, antiguo baterista de Fleet Foxes, que viene al San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012 presentando su último “Fear Fun”, rítmico y estimulante, un placer para los oídos mas selectos. Será la marca para comenzar este sábado 2 de Junio con una tarde cargada de música. Como siempre en los mejores conciertos The Whistles estará presente. -Andrés Aguilar Caro (Barcelona)

The other day I had to answer a series of questions inquiring about my musical tastes, in which I had to confess that Country music has been one of my inspiring influences, and that Folk Music has always made up the balance of live concerts that I prefer to watch. There's something about the sound that envelops me and comforts me, but it is so personal that a precise description would be a rather large chronical (something that I promise for the future). 

To tilt the balance I have always needed a mix, such as that promised by Father John Misty in his music, former drummer of Fleet Foxes, he is coming to San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012 and presenting his latest release "Fear Fun", rhythmic and uplifting, it is a pleasure for even the most selective ears. This will be the mark to start off Saturday 2nd June with an afternoon full of music. As always with the best concerts, The Whistles will be there.

San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012: Pegasvs

Sergio Pérez García y Luciana Della Villa son la clase de personas con las que puedo haber terminado compartiendo una coca cola en medio de una fiesta, y no me extrañaría que eso hubiera sucedido ya, viniendo de los mundos que compartimos, salpicados de un sintetismo melódico que renueva a ese pop hipsteriano que comienza a agobiar en la escena underground. Ellos, ya viejos en su escuela pese a su juventud, han sido bendecidos por la gran Canada para su proyecto Pegasvs recién lanzado, y del cuál su canción “Brillar” os traigo hoy.

Reconoceréis la química que su productora inspira en bandas como Scissor Sisters o El Guincho, pero con éste duo del oscuro Barcelonés probaremos algo poco visto, especialmente en este género en el cuál la lengua española apenas rasguña el escudo anglosajón, pero que se prevée como una de las bandas mas esperadas en el San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012, y donde The Whistles participará con todo su arsenal para poderos traer todo el evento... Sergio Pérez García and Luciana Della Villa are the kind of people that I could end up sharing a glass of coke with in the middle of a party, and it would not surprise me if that had happened already, living in the worlds we seem to share, dotted with a melodic synthecism they breath life into the hipster pop that is beginning to overwhelm the underground scene. They, the oldest in school despite their youth, have been blessed by the fantastic production of Canada with their latest project Pegasvs which has been recently launched, and from which this song "Shine" is the one we bring to you today. 

Remeniscent of the chemistry that produced inspiration in bands such as Scissor Sisters or Guincho, this dark duo from Barcelona, however, bring something else rarely seen, especially within this genre which, in the Spanish language only really scratches the Anglo-Saxon shield, still they are veiwed as one of the most anticipated bands of the San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012, where The Whistles will be participating with all our arsenal and might to bring you the power of the whole event... from Barcelona with love.

San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012: Spiritualized

Spiritualized es una banda hecha a la medida de un público que nunca ha envejecido junto a ellos. Los hemos visto mantener una línea en los estilos musicales que llevan controlando con una perfección matemática desde que comenzaron a principios de los años 90, y eso ha hecho que generación tras generación sigan adoptando fans que siguen al tanto su constante búsqueda de un ritmo frenético y una constante rima instrumental.

Detrás de ellos, la base es Jason Pierce, un enigmático artista que lleva la bandera de la exploración que Spiritualized hace en todos sus álbumes. Desde hace años quería ir a verlos, y este año el San Miguel Primavera Sound me da la oportunidad de hacerlo, allí estará The Whistles para recargar energías con un concierto que promete ser mejor que el lanzamiento del Apolo X. -Andrés Aguilar Caro (Barcelona)

Spiritualized is a band made to measure for an audience that has never grown old alongside them. We have seen them maintaining a line of musical style that they have lead with almost mathematical perfection since they began in the early 90's, and this is how generation after generation they have continued to adopt fans to follow them in their constant search for a frenetic rhythm and a constant instrumental rhyme.

Behind them, the base is Jason Pierce, an enigmatic artist who carries the banner of exploration that Spiritualized have exampled in all of their albums. For years I have wanted to go and see them, and this year's San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012 gives me the opportunity to do just that, and The Whistles will be there to recharge their energies at a concert that promises to be better than the launch of Apollo X.

Está claro que a muchos artistas les gusta cultivar el misterio de su imagen. ¿Es si acaso por marketing? ¿Por crear un halo de misterio? ¿Generar tendencias? Nunca se sabe, pero está claro que lo importante a la hora de ponerse una máscara en el escenario al final no es el atuendo sino la calidad de lo que produce, o al menos si quieres ser justo al hablar simplemente de la creación musical. 

John Talabot, un chico de Barcelona, lleva años rodando alrededor del mundo con su estilo disco muy personal, buscado y seleccionado por las mejores revistas y productoras, dada la internacionalidad de su estilo. En una de sus visitas a si ciudad natal, lo veremos actuar el jueves 31 de Mayo en el San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012. Un éxito más en su lista, y The Whistles lo bailará porque lo vale. It’s clear that many artists like to cultivate the mystery around their image. Is this the case for marketing purposes? Is it to create an aura of mystery? Generating trends? You never know, but it is clear that the important thing when putting on a stage mask, in the end, is that it is not the oufit you wear but the quality of what is produced, or at least, if you want to talk fairly, simply the musical creativity. 

John Talabot, a guy from Barcelona, has spent years going around the world with his very personal style of disco, he has been searched out and selected by the best magazines and producers, due to the international nature of his style. In one of his visits to his hometown, we will be seeing him on Thursday May 31 at San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012. One more success on his list, and where The Whistles will be dancing with him, because he's worth it. He will be on at 3:10 am, and we’ll tell you how it went; right next to the sea and at that time in the morning, it promises to be magical.

San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012: Friends

Jueves 31 de Mayo del 2012, será el día en el que oficialmente The Whistles conocerá a Friends, cinco cuerpos de gira mundial y que por primera vez pasarán por un escenario Catalán con una gran bola de espejos, tal cual imitara Blondie en “Heart of Glass”, para hacernos bailar con la voz melodiosa y rabiosa de Samantha Urbani, diosa Indie venida desde el lejano Brooklyn. 

Si no fuera por el San Miguel Primavera Sound que les obliga a parar en Barcelona no tendríamos la gran oportunidad de verlas, y creo que tenemos la culpa de ello un poco, desde que las escuchamos por primera vez no hemos parado de pedirlas en todos los sitios, llevando su música debajo del brazo e intentándolas colar en cada fiesta. 

Seguro que bailaremos non stop por culpa de Samantha y su banda, pero seguro que también será su culpa que el viernes me despierte pensando en su sonrisa y que vaya cantando “I´m His Girl” mientras camino al trabajo, espero al menos no ser el único. -Andrés Aguilar Caro (Barcelona)

Thursday May 31st 2012, is the day that The Whistles will officially meet Friends, five bodies on a world tour that, for the first time, will be playing on a Catalan stage with a mirror ball, covering Blondie’s "Heart of Glass", and making us dance along to the melodious and wild voice of Samantha Urbani, Indie goddess hailing from the distant Brooklyn.

If it were not for the fact that San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012 is requiring them to stop at Barcelona I would not have this amazing opportunity to see them, and I think we have ourselves to blame a bit for this, due to the fact that this is the first time we have heard about them, but since then we have not stopped asking about them everywhere, taking their music in hand and trying to sneak it into every party we have attended.

It is absolutely certain that we will be dancing non stop because of Samantha and her band, but it will also surely be their fault that on Friday I will wake up thinking about her smile and be singing "I'm His Girl" as I walk to work, I hope that at least I won’t be the only one.

San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012: Odio París

No me equivocaba hace mas de un año cuándo vi de teloneros en Barcelona a The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart a los chicos de Odio París, y pensar que seguramente no les costaría demasiado esfuerzo convertirse en estrellas del Shoegaze español. Sus guitarras acústicas destempladas no me dejaban lugar a duda de la riqueza de lo que estaba viendo, incluso a comprometer a los Pains a sufrir el subir al escenario y contener la energía que ya habían dejado los chicos catalanes impregnada en el escenario. Difícil tarea la que tienen a veces las bandas principales cuándo sus teloneros ponen el listón tan alto.

Conocidos ya en toda España, suponemos que el esfuerzo que se han dejado detrás de cada presentación, dentro de cada uno de los nuevos temas que poco a poco han ido saliendo, tiene como recompensa poder lanzarse en un festival como el San Miguel Primavera Sound, y que sean reconocidos a partir de ahora en una escena mundial donde el español se abre camino como nueva fuente dentro del género. Odio París será como nosotros comenzaremos el próximo sábado 2 de Junio nuestra gran tanda de conciertos en Barcelona. Sugerencia que no os podéis perder. -Andrés Aguilar Caro (Barcelona)

I was right over a year ago, when I saw the guys from Odio Paris opening for The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart at their Barcelona gig, when I thought at that moment that it surely wouldn´t  take them too much effort to become stars of the Spanish Shoegaze scene. Their intemperate acoustic guitars gave me no doubt as to the richness of what I saw that night, enough to make the Pains jump on stage to maintain the energy that the Catalan boys had already left soaked on the stage. It can be a difficult task sometimes for some big bands when their openers set the bar so high.

Already now known throughout Spain, we suppose that the energy that they have left behind at each show, and within each one of their new songs that they have been releasing little by little, has earned them the reward of performing at a festival like the San Miguel Primavera Sound 2012, and where from now on they will be recognized as part of a worldwide scene, where spanish language is making its way forwards as a new source within the genre. Odio Paris will be the concert that will be our first, on Saturday June 2nd, of a fantastic array of concerts in Barcelona. A suggestion that you can not afford to miss.
