Solveig Selj es una fotógrafa noruega, radicada en Oslo, ha trabajado para MTV y publicaciones de moda como Vainity Teen, The Fashionisto y Models.com. En su trabajo encontramos fotografía de moda, films y retratos, todos llenos de naturalidad y romanticismo.
Conversamos con ella y nos contó sobre la importancia de blogs y publicaciones independientes para dar a conocer el trabajo de los artistas. Ademas de contarnos sobre su estadía en New York y sus planes de visitar Italia y París en lo que queda del año.
Haz participado en publicaciones de moda como Vanity Teen, VAGA y The Fashionisto, y tu trabajo ha sido admirable, ¿Por qué escogiste la fotografía de moda?
Porque el oficio me fascinó. Llego a expresarme creativamente, lo cual es muy importante para mí, y me encantan ambos moda y fotografía, así que es ¡el combo perfecto!
La fotografía es uno de los medios de expresión creativa más interesantes. ¿De qué manera tus fotografías reflejan quién eres?
Creo que la forma en que enfoco la fotografía de moda dice más acerca de quién soy que el trabajo mismo necesariamente… pero si se destaca, entonces está bien. Trato de tener un enfoque tranquilo con mi trabajo. Trabajo mucho, y si no pudiera estar relajada con él y “disfrutar el camino” supongo que no sería capaz de hacer todo esto! Es muy importante para mí tener una buena química con el modelo para lograr el feeling que estoy buscando en mis fotos. Me gusta lo natural, suave y romántico, un poco retro buscando fotos sin demasiado photoshop. Espero que mis fotos reflejen lo que considero bello en la fotografía de moda.
Vives en Oslo, Pero haces muchos viajes a New york, ¿Qué representa para tu trabajo cada ciudad?
Ahora mismo estoy en New York por tres meses para hacer algo de trabajo. Me encanta viajar e inspirarme por los lugares que visito y me siento muy afortunada de poder hacerlo! Este verano visité Italia para hacer un trabajo en la revista italiana Dmoda. Después de New York voy a ir a Francia para hacer parte de una Exhibición en París.
Los films y la fotografía son muy importantes en tu profesión, ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de cada uno?
Me encantan las fotos estáticas. Una Buena foto puede ser vista y disfrutada durante siglos. Mira las fotos de Richard Avedon por ejemplo. Sus fotos son tan hermosas hoy como siempre. Hay algo mágico respecto a una Buena foto. Me encanta esa atemporalidad que puedes lograr con las estáticas.
Con los films en la otra mano, me encanta que puedes aumentar el “feeling” que quieres lograr añadiendo música y movimiento. Es muy divertido trabajar con movimiento y pones a trabajar tu cerebro algo diferente a las fotos estáticas.
En todos los trabajos encontramos desafíos de los cuales podemos aprender y ser mejores, ¿Cuál ha sido tu trabajo más difícil?
No sé si puedo escoger un solo trabajo, pero se vuelve desafiante cuando hay muchas personas diferentes, con opiniones diferentes queriendo tener voz y voto en lo que haces. Quieres complacerlos a todos, pero a la vez mantener tu integridad como fotógrafa. No siempre es posible hacer ambas y eso puede ser muy frustrante.
Ahora que la fotografía es tu profesión, ¿Hace parte de tu vida también como un hobby o cómo influye está en tu tiempo libre?
Realmente no tengo mucho tiempo libre, entonces supongo que podrías decir que es un hobby… El poco tiempo libre que tengo intento pasarlo con mis amigos y mi familia. Pero amo lo que hago y creo que es un trabajo muy gratificante crear algo y generar reacciones.
La belleza se percibe de muchas maneras, ¿Qué hace que una imagen sea atractiva para ti?
Estoy muy fascinada con los rostros interesantes. Un modelo que se ve un poco diferente me intriga y puede inspirar a veces una sesión entera. Para mí una Buena foto no es necesariamente una foto atractiva. Todo se basa en la interacción entre quien ve la foto y la persona de la foto. Por eso es que me encanta tomar fotos de la gente, ambos moda y retratos.
Finalmente, ¿Cuán importante crees que han sido los blogs independientes para dar a conocer tu trabajo alrededor del mundo?
Creo que el reportaje en blogs y revistas en línea son medios muy importantes para ser reconocida alrededor del mundo. Internet hace el mundo más pequeño y hace posible llegar a más personas. También lo hace más difícil porque tienes mucha más competencia, pero eso me hace trabajar y hacer fotos más sólidas.

You’ve participated in fashion magazines like Vainity Teen, VAGA and The Fashionisto, besides your job is amazing. Why did you become a fashion photographer?
Becouse the occupation fascinated me. I get to express myself creatively, which is very important to me. And I love both fashion and photography, so it`s the perfect combo!
Photography is one of the most interesting mediums of creative expression. How does your photography’s show who you are?
I think the way I approach fashion photography say more about who I am than the work itself necessarily... but if it shines through then that’s cool. I try to have a laid back approach with my work. I work a lot, so if I couldn’t be relaxed about it and “enjoy the ride” I guess I wouldn’t be able to do it all! It`s very important to me that I have good chemistry with the model to get the feeling I`m looking for in my pictures. I like the natural, soft and romantic, a little retro looking pictures without too much photoshoping. Hopefully my pictures reflect what I consider to be beauty within fashion photography.
You’re located in Oslo, but you make a lot of trips to NYC, what does represent each city to your work?
Right now I`m in New York for three months to do some work. I love to travel, and get inspired by the places I visit, so I feel very lucky to be able to do that! This summer I visited Italy to do a fashion series for the Italian Magazine DModa. After New York I`m going to France to contribute to an exhibition in Paris.
Films and photography are very important in your career, what do you like the most of each one?
I love stills. A good still picture can be viewed and enjoyed for centuries. Take Richard Avedon`s pictures for example. His pictures are as beautiful today as ever. There is something magical about a good still picture. I love that timelessness that you can achieve with stills!
With film on the other hand I love that you can amplify the feeling you want to achieve by adding music and motion. It`s a lot of fun to work with movement, and you get to work your brain a little differently from shooting stills.
Every job is challenging, we can learn and we can be better. Which have been your most difficult job? Why?
I don`t know if I can point out a single job, but it gets challenging when there is a lot of different people with different opinions wanting to have a say in what you do. You want to please everyone, but still keep your integrity as a photographer. It’s not always possible to do both, and that can be very frustrating.
Photography is your career now. Do you use it as a hobby as well or how does influence in your leisure time?
I don`t really have a lot of time off, so I guess you could say it`s a hobby as well… The little time I have of I try to spend with my friends and family. But I love what I do, and I think it`s a very rewarding job to create something and get feedback on it.
Beauty is subjective. What does a picture attractive to you?
I am very fascinated with interesting faces. A model that looks a little different intrigues me, and can inspire a whole shoot sometimes. To me a good picture is not necessarily an attractive picture. It`s all about the interaction between the viewer and the subject in the picture. That`s why I love taking pictures of people, both fashion and portraits.
Finally how much important do you think have been independent blogs for you job being recognized around the world?
I think coverage on blogs and in online magazines are very important ways to get recognized around the world. Internet makes the world smaller, and makes it possible to reach out to more people. It also makes it harder because you have much more competition, but that drives me to work and produce more, and stronger pictures.
